Testimonial from ECS Student – Ayumi
Why did you choose ECS?
I have traveled to the United States several times, but since it was my first time living here for extended time, I wanted to learn English that I can use for everyday communication which is necessary in day to day life. Thus, I searched for school that can provide for my needs. With a large number of instructors, I was able to choose one that suits me, and the ability to customize lesson contents was the deciding factor. Also, I was relieved that the staff speak Japanese.
What are you learning at ECS?
I am learning English conversations useful for my day to day life and how to write emails. There are many incidents where I exchange information by phone or e-mail to my child’s preschools and hospitals. There are many English words that blend into Japanese, but many are used differently from their original meaning, which surprise me every lesson. It is also interesting to learn expression and nuances of native speakers.
Please tell us about benefits of attending ECS.
The teachers teach me not only English conversation but also useful information about American life. For example, information on groceries and daily necessities that are not included in the guidebook can be very helpful. In addition, I often get refreshed by being told about things I have troubles with in life and things that I do not know how to express. Since I can follow the lessons according to my own wishes, sometimes I end up just asking questions.
Has there been any change after attending ECS?
By learning how to speak from native speakers, English conversation has become even more fun. It makes me very happy to actually use the expressions I learned in class to reach out to other people. It’s easier to understand than the expressions I learned in Japan, and I think I can express what I want to say compared to before. As the hurdles to learn English conversation decreased, I was able to join the English conversation club sponsored by the library and increase my opportunities to speak English. Every day I feel my world is expanding.
How do you want to continue in the future?
I still encounter situations that leave me confused from language barrier, but my goal is to live an enjoyable American life by talking to my teacher and getting advice. Since 2020, I am currently switching to online classes from onsite lessons, but it is also amazing that I can take classes almost the same as face-to-face classes. In addition, I was able to spend a meaningful time with other students by attending online group lessons that ECS has provided several times. I would like to participate again if the opportunity arose.
